Dr. Ajufor Ben Ifeanyi
The medical director of El Comfort hospital Bonsac Asaba Dr. Ajufor Ben Ifeanyi has called on the general public to restrain from anything that expose them into having cancer, fibroid and mortality rate both in children and adults.
Dr. Ajufor in an interview described cancer as an abnormal growth of the body tissues; he said it can affect the skin, bone, muscles, brain, breast, lungs, cervical region and any other parts of the body and these cells can alter the normal function of normal cells and may lead to death.
He buttressed that there is need to have early screening of the disease as it could be corrected at the early part of the aliment, adding that some cancers could be preventive. Skin cancers are common among albinos, some chemical can equally cause this aliment, some drugs used indiscriminately, smoking can also lead to cancers in the lungs, ultra violet light can also cause the aliment, depletion of ozone layer that produces intense heat could also affect the skin especially that of albinos, Human Papilloma virus and some are genetically transferred from generation to generation or could be found
He advices the public to prevent exposures to excessive heat, have early screening, immunize children, have surgical correction if detected, undergo chemotherapy of cancer drugs, avoid rays that may kill the cells of the body.
Dr. Ajufor noted that unlike cancer, fibroid could also be dangerous and prevent women from getting pregnant, he said that fibroid does not easily transform to cancer, and the causes are unknown, adding that it is common with women who had delay in child birth, as the womb could not see what to carry at a time then it will grow fibroid, it could be easily treated with surgical operation when it becomes symptomatic, he advises women to observe their systems for any abnormality could be corrected if detected early. Dr. Ajufor also commented on the rate of mortality in Africa, Nigeria and Delta state as it is caused by malnutrition, dirty environment, and increases in mosquitoes attack that give room to high epidemic of malaria and the HIV syndrome. He commended the Delta state government for making the policy of under five free children healthcare which had made poor citizen have access to medical health care, he said that the program had actually reduced the mortality rate among Delta children.
On his part as a doctor in Asaba metropolis, he had been supporting residents in various ways, provision of water to the public, reduction of healthcare bills in his hospital to enable the poor access drugs, sensitizing the public on the need to maintain healthy lifestyle, he said they do not put their backs on patients who could not afford their medical bills, he had also contributed in ensuring accessible road to the area where the hospital is located and the drainage to avoid flooding of the area.
He also debunked the rumor that his hospital is infected with Lassa Fever, he described the act as unlawful ad ungodly on the part of the mongers, adding that the said patient was brought to him for treatment but having diagnose the patient, he quickly transferred him to UNTH Nnewi for proper treatment and there after he died; as regards to infecting the nurses and patients and moreover himself is a blatant false; as at press time the hospital was filled up with patients waiting for treatment.
